Sean Hoping Local Knowledge Will Boost Hopes For Glenmuir Qualifier

Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship In Association With Peugeot & MPI Press Release

12 May 2010 2 minute read Sean Hoping Local Knowledge Will Boost Hopes For Glenmuir Qualifier
Sean O’Donnell hopes to avoid any Jekyll and Hyde golf this year as he prepares for the Scottish qualifier of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Scotscraig on May 24.

O’Donnell, of Balbirnie Park, reached last year’s final but after qualifying at a relatively calm Dundonald Links returned to the same venue for the grand final only to find driving rain and fierce winds had turned the course into a monster.

Twelve months on O’Donnell is hoping for kinder weather at this year’s £78,000 final, which is being played at The Oxfordshire, from August 10-13.

“I think we saw the two sides of Dundonald last year,” he said.

“The qualifier was fine but the weather for the final was horrific. I woke on up the second day and it was blowing a gale and they were probably the toughest conditions I’ve ever played in.”

O’Donnell has banished those memories however and is looking forward to the Glenmuir qualifier, which is also supported by Peugeot and MPI Financial Services, and hopes a little local knowledge will work in his favour:

“Scotscraig is a course I know well, it’s only 30 minutes from where I’m based,” he said.

“There have been a few changes made to the course and I think it’s got a bit tougher to be honest. There are quite a few holes where, if you don’t get it just right, you can be in trouble.

“Sometimes you have to know where to put it and that’s where I’m hoping a little local knowledge comes in handy.

“I’m looking for some improvement at the moment, but my plan is to qualify for the final again and hopefully The Oxfordshire will be a bit kinder.”

Rob Arnott, of Bishoprigg’s Golf Range, won last year’s qualifier when par was good enough to top the leaderboard.

“I’ve played Scotscraig a few times and I think I know it well enough to know where the problems could lie. I won’t have time to get over there for a practice but I know what to expect,” he said

Glenmuir managing director Colin Mee added: "The start of the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship qualifiers always marks the beginning of the tournament season for PGA pros, and we are really looking forward to another fantastic year of golf.

“Now more than ever the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship offers professionals the chance to compete with fellow professionals, but also to meet and share views and ideas on current trading. We hope all of the competitors will enjoy this year's tournament."
