Want to introduce your child to the world of golf this year? Here’s how you can do it…

11 January 2018 1 minute read Top tips for getting kids into golf
There are plenty of reasons to get your kid playing golf. As well as being able to share your hobby with them, it helps them get outdoors, keep active, learn new skills and connect with others, all while having fun. But how can you get your kid started? Read on to find out…

Take them with you
It’s no use trying to get your kid to play golf without showing them what a game really looks like. By taking them onto the green with you, you can play with them and teach them some basics, like how to swing and which club to use – making it informative but fun, too.

Teach them the key principles
Accompany a practical lesson with a conversation about the key rules and etiquette in golf. It’s a great way to get them thinking about the respect that’s involved in the game – and it might pique their interest, too. Try the USGA website for a simple list of rules.

Use an initiative
There are plenty of initiatives offered by top golfing associations to get more kids playing golf, so consider having a look at some of them to get some ideas. Try the English Golf Union’s Get into Golf or the Golf Foundation’s Golf Roots to find local courses or read up on some top tips.

Find an instructor
If your child enjoys accompanying you to the green, consider looking for an instructor to help refine your kid’s skills and develop their experience. It’s a great way to build their confidence, too. Line up meetings with a few and bring your kid along to meet them – it’s important they feel comfortable with whoever you choose, so ask them who they like best, too.

Find a junior course
With a bit of research, you should be able to find a local course that offers junior or ‘family’ tees, which are more kid-friendly and a bit less imposing than your average course. Make sure you play along with them on their first go – it’ll give them the confidence to tackle the course on their own later on.

Treat them to equipment
You don’t need to spend hundreds on fancy equipment when your child first starts playing golf, but a set of clubs of their own will be a present they’ll treasure forever. Plenty of golf companies will stock junior clubs, so do some research to find a set they’ll love – and take them with you to try them out before you buy.

Most importantly, make sure they’re having fun
It’s no use trying to force your child to start playing golf, so make sure you’re giving them the space they need to have fun on the course as well as learn new skills. If they’re finding it difficult to stay focused on the course, introduce some games instead – you can even turn it into a friendly competition that’s sure to get them revved up.
