Perhaps the most recognisable tartan type, this pattern has deep roots in Scottish history and culture. So, if you want to know more about how Black Watch tartan came about and the journey to its popularity today, then let's jump right into it.

The History of Black Watch Tartan

The Black Watch story dates back to 1725 when General George Wade, authorised by King George I of Great Britain, formed a 'watch' force that was tasked with patrolling the Scottish Highlands.

Made up of soldiers from six independent companies or Highland clans, this group was formed amidst several rebellions and uprisings. Ultimately, their job was to maintain order and enforce government authority.

The soldiers that made up the Black Watch were instructed to wear the same tartan to set them apart - a rich pattern that included rich greens, dark blue, and black striping. This would later become known as Black Watch tartan and, in some cases, 'government tartan'.

The Black Watch uniform

The original Black Watch uniform was a testament to practicality and tradition, with the soldiers in this royal regiment dressed in a 12-yard-long dark tartan that is now known as Black Watch tartan. It was also fastened around their waist with a leather belt.

In some cases, these uniforms were accessorised with a scarlet jacket or waistcoat with buff facings and white lace, complete with a blue bonnet.

Black Watch tartan in battle

When the soldiers were armed with their muskets, bayonets, and broadswords, they were quite a formidable sight on the battlefield. Of course, they also wore kilts and carried bagpipes as essential components of the uniform that served a symbolic purpose in battle.

Throughout its history, the Black Watch played a significant role in several notable conflicts as part of the British Army's campaigns.

These included Fallujah, Waterloo, and both World Wars. For many, it was the bravery and devotion of the Black Watch soldiers in these battles that earned them a place in military history and instilled a deep sense of pride within the regiment.

Black Watch tartan today

Today, it's recognised worldwide and worn by almost everyone, from members of the British Royal Family to Highland athletes. There are also plenty of fashion designers who use this tartan in their designs!

At Glenmuir, Black Watch tartan has deep roots, and we use this traditional pattern in several of our men's tartan golf pieces to celebrate our heritage.

When Should Tartan Be Worn?

With such a rich history, it's easy to wonder where - and when - Black Watch tartan can or should be worn. Luckily, this 'open tartan' (meaning it can be worn by anyone) is extremely versatile and can be used in virtually any setting. You may even have seen this pattern in clothing stores or as part of a designer collection and just haven't realised it!

Formal events

Black Watch tartan is a huge hit at formal events like weddings - particularly if you have Scottish roots. In fact, members of the bridal party and wedding guests alike will often incorporate some form of tartan into their ensembles.

For men, this could mean wearing kilts and jackets with Black Watch tartan, while the women may opt for dresses or shawls instead.

Additionally, some formal Scottish events like Highland Balls or Galas usually have a dress code that calls for tartan. That means you can break out your finest kilts and jackets and look incredible in traditional dress.

Casual wear

Tartan - especially Black Watch tartan - seamlessly integrates into everyday outfits. While the pattern is most commonly seen on shirts like the Crawford Mens Printed Performance Golf Shirt, trousers, and outerwear like jackets and sweatshirts, it could really be used for almost any piece of clothing you wear!

For example, our Quinn Touch of Cashmere 1891 Heritage Sweatshirt can be worn with a relaxed pair of jeans or khakis for a casual look. Or, you can dress it up and make it a little more formal by switching out your accessories and the style of trousers you're wearing. This means that it can also go from day to night (or to the golf course!) with no hassle.

Business or professional settings

Tartan accessories can offer a touch of personality to your typical business attire, elevating your standard suit with effortless style. Although there is such a thing as too much tartan in the workplace - especially when you're trying to maintain your professionalism - a Black Watch tartan pocket square or tailored pants under a neutral-tone blazer looks incredible.

If you prefer an understated look, a tartan scarf or tie can also add a splash of colour and intrigue without being too flashy.

Sporting or outdoor activities

Black Watch tartan can really make its mark when you're outdoors, especially within the realm of Highland games or Scottish sporting competitions. In fact, Scottish athletes often have tartan attire like the Wick Mens Lightweight Performance Golf Midlayer while spectators will usually wear accessories like scarves and beanies.

Although it's not common knowledge, there is actually a much deeper connection between sports like golf and wearing tartan than you may realise. So, let's take a closer look at how golf and tartan go hand-in-hand...

The Connection Between Golf And Tartan

If you've ever seen a golf tournament (either live or televised), you may have already noticed how often tartan is worn on the greens. But why? How does tartan relate to golf?

The connection between tartan and golfing clothes is deeply ingrained in both Scottish heritage and the history of the sport. This is because golf originated in Scotland in the 1500s and started when tartan had already long since been an integral part of the Scottish identity.

Interestingly, early golfers often wore traditional Scottish clothing. This included kilts made from tartan fabric that gave them a distinctive style when on the course. Over time, this attire became synonymous with the game of golf, and it seems to have stuck well in today's modern golf scene!
