Finding the best materials for golf is important for a number of reasons. You will want the clothes you wear while playing golf to feel good, perform well in different conditions, and look good.

One of the best golf clothing materials is Merino wool. This article will tell you everything you need to know about Merino wool and why it is a great option for golf clothes.

We will also show you some of our most popular Merino wool pieces. With more than 130 years of experience creating golf clothing, we know a thing or two about what works on the course.

What Is Merino Wool?

If you are looking for a natural material that provides great performance, Merino wool is the perfect option for you.

Merino wool is known for being the world's softest sheep's wool. Despite being lightweight and breathable, it also has great insulating properties and is naturally antibacterial.

Merino wool is wool from Merino sheep. Modern Merino sheep are typically associated with farms in New Zealand and Australia. However, the history of the Merino sheep can be traced back to Spain.

The History Of Merino Wool

It is thought that the North African Berbers introduced flocks of sheep to Spain sometime around the 13th century. These flocks went on to lay the foundations of the Merino sheep we know today.

The Spanish went on to dominate the fine wool industry for the following 400 years. The sheep were fiercely guarded because the industry was so lucrative for the nation.

The Spanish monopoly came crashing down in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. Other countries had access to Merino sheep and the industry spread across Europe.

During this time the Dutch government's influence in South Africa saw flocks being sent over. It was from this flock of Merino sheep that quality wool pioneers John and Elizabeth MacArthur took 70 sheep to Australia in 1788.

Fast forward 20 years and Australia now boasted more than 2 million Merino sheep thanks to the MacArthur's and other settlers.

The history of Merino wool in New Zealand branches off from Australia. The first sheep were brought to New Zealand by the Reverend Samuel Marsden in 1814. More were to follow from Australia, but the lack of quality stock saw them importing from farther afield to maintain a high standard.

As breeders from New Zealand began importing sheep from Europe, the genetics of New Zealand Merino began to develop and is now regarded as the best in the world.

Merino Wool Quality

Merino wool is widely regarded as one of the finest wools on the market. This means it is used to create luxury apparel by major fashion brands around the world. The qualities of Merino wool also make it the perfect choice for high-quality technical sportswear.

The reason Merino wool is so popular and effective is because it is so fine. In fact, when compared with human hair, superfine Merino wool can be just a quarter the width!

The thinness of Merino wool results in incredible softness and flexibility. Traditional wool can be tough and scratchy; Merino wool is significantly more comfortable and high-quality examples can be similar to cashmere.

You might mistake that Merino wool will be delicate because it is thin and soft, but you would be mistaken. When compared with cotton fibres that can withstand being bent around 3,000 times before becoming compromised, Merino wool excels. Merino wool can withstand upwards of 20,000 bends and can even be machine washed. That is a benefit it holds over cashmere.

As a natural fibre, it is also great for temperature regulation and performs well in wet conditions. Take a look below to discover the individual qualities of Merino wool that make it the perfect option for golf attire.

Merino Wool Traits

While golf is not as physical as many other sports, it still requires a lot of freedom of movement and stamina to negotiate a golf course in all weather. Because of this, performance clothing is essential for professionals.

Amateurs that want to improve their game and comfort on the course can also take a leaf out of professional golfer's books.

Investing in high-quality golf wear can ensure a golfer doesn't overheat, get soaked in the rain, and has a good range of motion.

Merino wool is the perfect material for golf clothing because of its qualities. These include:

Breathability

Breathable clothing is weaved in a way that allows air to pass through them. This is essential for temperature regulation. It facilitates the quick vapour transmission of moisture. To put that in simple terms: it helps to wick moisture from the body which can then dry out quickly.

Moisture-wicking technology is used in the majority of high-performance sportswear. Merino wool is a naturally moisture-wicking fibre that is made of microscopic plates that vapour can escape through.

This minimises the risk of sweaty, clammy clothes that weigh you down and stick to the body.

Antibacterial and anti-odour

Merino wool is naturally antibacterial. This means that natural properties inhibit microorganism growth.

This is because sheep secrete a fatty substance known as lanolin to protect them from infection. The sebaceous glands secrete this substance that is then present in the wool.

It is true that a lot of the lanolin is lost during the manufacturing process. However, wool has also been shown to regulate body temperature and slow the thermophysical responses that result in sweat.

This helps to reduce the effects of bacteria and organisms that are present on human skin coming into contact with sweat and causing body odour.

The hygroscopic, moisture-wicking qualities of wool transfer sweat from the body and leave the body cooler and sweat-free. A lot of synthetic materials lack this natural ability and result in heavy, sweaty clothing that produces an odour.

Merino wool is the perfect material for golf clothing to minimise the risk of odours, especially on hot days.

Lightweight

Superfine fibres ensure Merino wool golf sweaters provide golfers with the perfect way to layer without becoming weighted down. Layering can help golfers keep warm in cooler conditions, but bulky sweaters can become heavy and restrict movement. Lightweight Merino wool won't negatively affect your golf swing.

Soft

Because merino wool fibre is a fraction of the size of human hair, it results in a super soft and comfortable material. Thicker wool will be itchy because it is thick and stiff. Merino wool is fine and flexible meaning it won't push into the skin.

Comparable with cashmere in many cases, this cost-effective luxury material is great for performance, style, and comfort.

Comfort is a significant factor in all levels of competition. Any athlete wearing clothes that are uncomfortable or inhibit their movement will suffer. Not only can it lead to physical discomfort, but it can also hamper concentration.

Warm

The issue with a lot of clothing is that it is designed for one environment. Light clothing will often suit warmer temperatures but leave the wearer feeling chilly when the temperature drops. Likewise, warmer clothing is better suited to cold temperatures and can result in overheating in sunny weather.

Merino wool is a unique fabric that can regulate body temperature and perform well in all weather.

During cold weather, Merino wool fibres crimp and trap air. This helps to create a layer of insulation and keeps the body warm.

During warm weather, its natural wicking properties transport sweat and moisture from the body as it evaporates. This helps to cool the body.

Low-maintenance

High-quality wool like cashmere can look and feel great, but it can also be a hassle to clean and look after. Merino wool provides comfort, style, and performance without the hassle.

The vast majority of Merino wool golf clothes can be machine washed; some can even be tumble dried. However, it is important that you check the care instructions for each product to ensure you provide the best care to make it last as long as possible.

The Pros And Cons Of Merino Wool For Golf Attire

Deciding on the best materials for your golf clothing can be challenging. There are so many excellent materials that provide different benefits. At Glenmuir, we only use the best to ensure high-quality products and performance.

If you are considering Merino wool golf clothes, we want you to have all the information available so you can make an informed decision. In a perfect world, every material used for golf attire would have nothing but benefits.

However, we would be remiss to ignore the cons of materials too. We want you to have a full picture, so here is a list of the pros and cons of Merino wool.

The Pros Of Merino Wool for Golf Attire

We have already covered many of the pros of Merino wool for golf clothing above. However, we will include them in a comprehensive list so you can weigh them up against any potential cons.

The pros of Merino wool for golf attire include:

Soft

The fine fibres of Merino wool ensure the material is extremely soft and comfortable.

Warm

The natural insulation of Merino wool helps golfers retain body heat in cold conditions. This can be essential to comfort and performance as it will help to keep your muscles warm and your blood flowing.

Moisture-wicking

Natural moisture-wicking is essential for sportswear. It will help to keep you cool and dry while competing in warm conditions.

Breathable

Breathability is another key factor for performance clothing. Merino wool allows air to circulate around the body, regulating your temperature and minimising the risk of overheating.

Odour Resistance

The natural antibacterial qualities of Merino wool inhibit the growth of odour-causing bacteria. This keeps golfers fresher for longer as they make their way around the course.

Lightweight

Lightweight clothing is better suited to sporting activities. It allows greater comfort and movement. Merino wool also has an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio. This means that the warmth it provides is comparable to significantly thicker and heavier materials.

UV Protection

Golfers are exposed to all sorts of weather and this means they need to protect themselves against potentially harmful UV rays. It is essential that golfers take the necessary precautions including applying sun cream, wearing UV protective lenses, and wearing clothing and accessories that protect the skin from direct UV rays, like Merino wool garments.

Durable

Despite being ultra-fine and comfortable, Merino wool is still able to withstand a lot of wear. This makes it the ideal choice for golfers that play regularly and don't want to worry about their clothes losing shape or deteriorating.

Easy to Care for

Luxury clothing typically looks and feels great, but you will usually have to sacrifice convenience when it comes to care. Thankfully, Merino wool is machine washable and low-maintenance.

It is also a wrinkle-resistant material which means it will still look great if you pull it out of a golf bag when the temperature drops.

Sustainable

Sustainability and eco-friendliness are important factors for many when it comes to the products they buy. Consumers want ethically sourced products with as little impact on the environment as possible.

Merino wool is a completely natural fibre, making it sustainable. It is also biodegradable making it an environmentally friendly option.

The Cons Of Merino Wool For Golf Attire

This list of cons has been provided to give you a balanced view of Merino wool and its suitability as a golf clothing material. Merino wool is widely accepted as one of the best natural materials for golf attire on the market. We like to think of it as a top-performing golfer, some aspects of their game shine above others. But they still bring home the trophy at the end of the day!

The minor cons of Merino wool for golf attire include:

Cost

Merino wool is a premium fibre and the cost will often reflect this. It is typically more expensive than synthetic materials or other wool types.

However, the comfort and performance of Merino wool often justify the cost. It is also a significantly cheaper option than cashmere despite having a similar quality.

Delicate

Merino wool is a durable material, but it is not indestructible. It can suffer from pilling, snags, or tears so it should be looked after.

Shrinkage

Always follow the care instructions on Merino wool golf clothes. While most garments can be machine-washed, they can shrink if this is done at the wrong temperature.

Can Cause Irritation

People with sensitive skin or allergies may find that Merino wool causes skin irritations. This is not always the case and it is significantly less abrasive than other wool alternatives.

Colour Options

The dye absorption properties of Merino wool can limit options for consumers in comparison with synthetic fibres. However, at Glenmuir we want our customers to have a great choice when it comes

to their golf clothes. Some of our Merino wool golf clothes are available in as many as 11 different colours.

Slow Drying

Merino wool has exceptional moisture-wicking capabilities. This helps to keep golfers dry and cool during the summer. However, when it is completely saturated after being washed it can take longer to dry.

Not Suited to Extreme Conditions

While Merino wool is a durable and long-lasting option, it does not suit abrasive or rugged conditions. Thankfully this won't be much of an issue for golfers unless you spend more time in the rough than on the fairway!

Susceptible to Moths

Moths love natural fibres and feed on the keratin that is found in natural materials like silk and wool. Proper storage solutions will minimise the risk of moths making a meal of your favourite Merino wool golf sweater.

How Does Merino Wool Protect Golfers From UV Rays?

A range of studies carried out in 1996, 1997, and 2000 by Hilfiker, Reinartm and Haerri respectively, discovered that Merino fibre is the best fabric for UV light protection.

This is because alternative materials like silk, cotton, or nylon only absorb limited wavelengths within the UV range. Wool offers far greater UV absorption through the spectrum.

Merino wool performed well and passed all the tests that were conducted. This is down to a number of reasons.

Merino wool fibres are densely packed and minimise the penetration of UV rays through the materials. The natural pigments (melanins) also absorb and dissipate UV radiation which protects the skin.

A UPF rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor)  measures how well a fabric blocks radiation. Merino wool used in Glenmuir clothing has a 40+ UPF rating meaning that only 1/40 or 2.5% of any radiation can pass through. This is generally regarded as excellent protection.

The Sustainability Of Merino Wool

Manufacturers and consumers of golf clothing have become more socially aware in recent years and sourcing sustainable and environmentally friendly materials is now a priority.

But how sustainable and environmentally friendly is Merino wool? Let's take a look at all the factors that contribute to the sustainability of clothing materials.

Positive Impacts

First, let's look at the positive environmental impacts of using Merino wool for golf clothing. This allows golfers to look and feel great while knowing the materials used in their clothing are greener than alternatives.

Renewable

The first, and most obvious benefit of using Merino wool for golf clothing is that it is a renewable and sustainably sourced natural fibre.

This means that as long as Merino sheep have access to food and water and live in a hospitable environment, their wool coat will grow back after being shorn.

On average, Merino sheep produce around 20 lbs (9 kg) of wool per year. Roughly 50% of this makes it through the sorting and processing stages.

This means that during the average lifespan of a Merino sheep (approximately 12 years), one single sheep is capable of producing the wool required to manufacture around 100 garments of clothing.

In comparison, synthetic materials would require around 125 gallons (473 litres) of oil to create the same amount.

Biodegradable

Another downside to synthetic materials is that they are not biodegradable. This means that when they reach the end of their lifecycle and are discarded, they will take up space in landfills.

Merino wool is naturally biodegradable and will degrade relatively quickly in the right conditions. As it deteriorates, the keratin is released and microorganisms in the soil can benefit. This releases nutrients into the soil which facilitates plant growth and creates a more fertile soil.

Wool has long been used as a natural garden fertiliser with impressive results in crops that use it.

The use of wool as a fertiliser also helps to retain water. This, coupled with the nutrients, improves the growth of plants. The benefit of stronger plant growth is that it will reduce land erosion and improve biodiversity.

Assisting the Carbon Cycle

Reducing free carbon in the earth's atmosphere is essential to minimising the risk of climate change. The removal of carbon from the air (sequestration) is carried out by plants which sheep then graze on.

The success of this process is evident in the carbon content of wool. Organic carbon makes up around half of Merino wool's composition. This is even higher than cotton which registers around 40%.

Less Washing Required

Another environmental benefit of Merino wool is it won't need to be washed as often as synthetic alternatives. Reducing the number of washes the average household carries out will minimise water waste and reduce the number of microplastics that find their way into waterways and oceans.

Merino wool's odour-resistant properties mean people can enjoy wearing their golf clothes more than once without having to wash them.

Longer lasting

Another great benefit of not having to wash Merino wool golf clothes after every wear is that they will last longer. Washing clothes is essential, there is no getting around that. But it will reduce the garment's lifespan if washed excessively.

When you add to this the fact that Merino wool is a durable, long-lasting material, you will find a garment that will stand the test of time.

You won't need to worry about fashion changes when you invest in Glenmuir Merino wool golf clothes. Our timeless style is admired on the course and in the clubhouse.

Negative Impacts

As with any manufacturing process and natural resource, there will be negative implications. While we have listed these below, we have also listed how the Merino wool industry is tackling these to make it an even better option.

Livestock Emissions

Merino wool is great for reducing carbon from the earth's atmosphere. However, livestock emissions are an issue. On average, experts estimate that Merino sheep release just under 5 kg of methane gas every year.

In New Zealand, moves were made to tax sheep farmers due to estimates that sheep account for 90% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions. Somewhat amusingly, this has been nicknamed the "fart tax". However, the seriousness of the environmental impact and how it would affect the wool industry in New Zealand is not a laughing matter.

Grazing

Overgrazing is also a potential threat and this can have a long-term negative effect on the areas concerned. Plants provide soil with a range of nutrients, overgrazing can result in reduced biodiversity and a greater risk of soil erosion.

Manufacturing Process

Using natural materials is far more environmentally friendly than creating synthetic materials. However, the manufacturing process still requires a lot of water and potentially harmful chemicals to treat the wool.

Dyeing wool can also result in byproducts that can be environmentally damaging. Thankfully, natural dyes that contain less harmful ingredients can be used. The only downside of this is they are typically more expensive.

Supply Chain

The steps needed to get Merino wool from the sheep and turn it into a high-quality sweater, polo shirt, or base layer can't be underestimated. Materials must be transported for different parts of the manufacturing process before reaching customers.

The carbon footprint of all clothing you own might surprise you. Golf clothing is no exception, but thankfully it is not all doom and gloom. Keep reading to learn how the Merino wool industry is taking steps to reduce its negative environmental impact.

How Sustainable Practices Are Minimising Negative Effects

The Merino wool industry has made changes to align with consumer habits that have changed to demand more sustainable practices. Some steps that have been taken include:

Regenerative Farming

The risk of overgrazing will have a negative impact on local environments and farmland. Regenerative agriculture can be used to combat this. In some cases, Merino wool farmers are implementing a range of techniques which include:

  • Rotational grazing to allow regrowth and recuperation

  • The planting of native trees and plants in pastures

  • Improving the quality of water in waterways

  • Composting sheep manure to sequester carbon

  • Pasture cropping to improve soil health and biodiversity

  • Creating natural barriers to minimise water waste and sustain optimal levels

These steps help farmers improve the quality of their farmland while reducing the risk of negative environmental impacts.

Industry Standards

The implementation of industry standards to streamline supply chains and improve farming practices is beneficial to everyone.

The creation of certifications and organisations to implement these changes have allowed standards to improve.

For example, Woolmark certification is given to show that manufacturers are using high-quality, sustainably sourced Merino wool in their garments. Certification guarantees:

  • Wool content levels are reached

  • Colours will not fade too quickly

  • The Merino wool is strong and durable

  • It has been tested for shape loss and shrinkage through laundry cycles

  • How it reacts to immersion in various liquids

All Merino wool sweaters and garments at Glenmuir are fully certified to guarantee only the best wool is used and that it is from renewable sources.
